Finding Fulfillment on the Water: Jesse’s Journey with EBB Students
There’s something special about watching young people discover the water for the first time—especially when it’s from the helm of a boat. For Jesse Rigby, a dedicated Board Member volunteering with the Introduction to Seamanship program in Pensacola, these moments have become a source of deep personal fulfillment.
Over the past few weeks, Jesse has welcomed groups of students from EBB (Escambia Boys Base) aboard for hands-on boating excursions. These aren’t just joyrides—they’re immersive experiences in boating safety, seamanship, and camaraderie. And according to the students, Jesse’s trips have quickly become the most sought-after activity on the calendar.
“I’m glad I have the time—and the energy,” Jesse says with a smile. “This has been a good experience for me.”
Each outing is thoughtfully planned, from the safety briefings and boat handling lessons to the hearty meals and, of course, the now-famous ice cream dessert. Jesse’s menus have ranged from pulled pork sandwiches and baked beans to homemade tuna and chicken salads, always with plenty of fresh fruit and enough food to satisfy even the hungriest teens. “Apparently, the word was out at EBB about the ice cream,” Jesse jokes. “It would have been tragic to be caught without it!”

But beyond the food and fun, what stands out most are the moments of connection. Jesse recalls one evening after dinner when two students began playfully competing over who had the highest GPA and most academic credits. “It was rewarding to hear them take pride in their achievements,” he says. “Jonathan and his staff at EBB are clearly doing some good work.”
With the help of mentors like Joe Jackson, who serves as both a lifeguard and an instructor, the students are learning to handle the boat with confidence. Jesse notes that while their enthusiasm sometimes needs a little “dampening,” they always listen and follow instructions willingly.
As the program continues, Jesse looks forward to more outings—especially with the upcoming group from the Workforce Development program.
“I hope some of the board members can join us in the future,” he adds. “It’s something you have to experience to truly appreciate.”
For Jesse, these trips are more than just a way to give back—they’re a reminder of the joy that comes from sharing knowledge, building trust, and creating memories on the water.
